Come Join Us!
The Teachers-Festival Liaison Council, in conjunction with the Avon Maitland District School Board, invites you to join us as we celebrate our 32nd annual Teachers’ Conference at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival.
Opening with a keynote presentation by Curt Tofteland, Founder & Producing Director of Shakespeare Behind Bars, this year’s conference will underscore how Shakespeare is relevant and accessible to everyone and how drama in general can be seamlessly integrated across the curriculum.
Exploring two of Shakespeare’s more controversial plays from the Festival season, Othello and The Merchant of Venice, Belarie Zatzman and Kathleen Gould Lundy from York University will contextualize the difficult knowledge in the plays and show how these issues remain relevant and powerful teaching opportunities in today’s classroom. Kevin Costa, Director of Education at Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, will lead an active exploration of the lighter side of these plays through clowning. Workshops presented by the Stratford Festival’s own Education Department staff and artists will look at Romeo and Juliet through the lens of original practices, historical context and period styles, staging battle sequences and more. Whether this is your first conference or you’re a seasoned attendee, we invite you to come, be refreshed, and be inspired.
