Friday Workshops (October 15)

The following are Friday morning only workshops.

6. Shakespeare and Media

Presented by Michael LoMonico, Senior Consultant on National Education at the Folger Shakespeare Library, this workshop will demonstrate a series of exciting new approaches and online resources for teaching Shakespeare – including Hyperlinks, Audacity, Voice Thread, Wordle, Pixton, Voxopop and MovieMaker/iMovie – that will enable students to create authentic web-based assignments such as voice and video discussion threads, podcasts, YouTube videos and Illuminated texts.

7. Directing Student Actors

This practical workshop led by Stephen Di Menna, will focus on strategies and techniques for producing and directing plays within a school setting. It is designed for classroom teachers who direct student-acted plays that address educational goals in drama and theatre. The goal is to give you ideas and activities that will help you develop and execute a production plan for directing a school play. Using a professional production process model, we will explore how you can bring professional work ethics and standards to your school productions in ways that are engaging, accessible and meaningful for students. Much focus will be on how to direct and coach authentic performances from young actors, and on helpful text-analysis strategies.

8. Remembering and Retelling Stories

This workshop is for teachers who would like to tell stories in their classroom but need a little help to develop their storytelling skills. Join Bob Barton for a practical session that involves small group training exercises focusing on how to choose, learn and tell stories to students from JK to 12.

9. Designing Women?

Join a panel of actors and academics for a probing look at the intriguing women in As You Like It and Dangerous Liaisons. Delve into the motivations behind the choices made and the deceptions perpetrated by such characters as Rosalind and the Marquise de Merteuil – past masters in the art of mind games?

10. 101 Drama Games

Do you wish you could incorporate drama activities more confidently and easily into your day? Are you in need of a voice warm-up or a fun way to divide your class into groups? Are you in need of some team-building, confidence-building or basic drama-skills activities? How about some more ideas for QDPA? Led by Festival artists, this workshop will help you to put together a toolkit of basic drama games, warmups and activities for use in your elementary classroom.

Note: at the conclusion of your workshop (approx. 11:30 a.m.) you will be boarding a bus for easy transport to The Church Restaurant and a wonderful lunch. Because of our tight timelines, it is important that everyone board the bus as quickly as possible. Your afternoon show begins promptly at 2.:00 p.m. A bus will bring you back to the Festival Theatre.
